Abstract

This research had as the main objective to determine the relationship between psychomotor development (coordination, language and motor skills) and academic performance of 4 and 5 years old children of Liceo Gabriela Mistral in the municipality of La Virginia (Risaralda, Colombia). Materials and methods: the research was addressed in the quantitative perspective in the descriptive studies with a comparative phase. A total of 87 preschool children aged 4 and 5 years participated in the study, from a non-probability sampling. The Psychomotor development test (PSYDT), which has been applied in different countries in Latin America and in Colombia was used. Results: Statistically significant associations between the academic performance of children and coordination and language (p = 0.045 and 0.013 respectively) were found. Conclusions: in this study it was shown that the levels of motor skills, coordination and language of children participating in the study are at a normal level with a performance of 96.6% which represents 83 out of the 87 children in the score obtained in the psychomotor development test. The results of academic achievement levels show that in the dimensions of cognitive, physical, communicative, aesthetic and ethical development, a greater percentage of children present higher and outstanding performance. In the basic performance the dimension showing higher percentage is cognitive, which represents great importance since the fundamental achievements for the transition to first grade are established in that dimension.
