Abstract
Objective: To characterize the behavior of variables recorded by the Dropout Prevention System in Higher Education (DPSHE) for the study of dropout rates at Universidad de Caldas during the 2009-2013 period. Date and place of the study execution: Manizales 2014. Method: non-experimental descriptive study. Two samples were analyzed. The first sample was composed by students who enrolled to take courses in the 2009-2013 period. The second sample was composed by students who did not enroll to take courses for two straight periods from 2009 to 2013 at Universidad de Caldas. Results: A total of 16,299 new students enrolled for first semester at Universidad de Caldas between 2009-I and 2013-II. Most of these students did not work and were between 16 and 20 years old. A 90.1% of the students belong to low income population (social stratum 1,2 and 3). The student’s mothers had finished either high school, elementary school or even they had a lower educational level (76.3%). From the students enrolled at Universidad de Caldas during that period, 6,704 students out of 112,181 did not renew their enrollment to take courses for two consecutive periods being the male dropouts rate higher than the female rate. Male dropouts also rated higher than female dropouts when the fact that they were working at the time they took the university entrance exam was analyzed. Students dropout rates at Universidad de Caldas were higher in students whose university entrance scores was low. Conclusions: It was identified that male students at Universidad de Caldas who were working at the time they took the university entrance exam, who were 26 years old or older, who did not have their own home, with a mother whose educational level was only elementary school or lower, and with a low score in the university entrance exam, had higher risk to become dropouts.
