Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of the pandemic and global discourses of diversity on design philosophy and practice in Latin America during the with-corona period (2022-2023). The research is based on the analysis of resonances and transformations in the design practices of fifty Latin American professionals, who were interviewed for the digital design platforms Naver Design Press and Typography Seoul in the Republic of Korea, between November 2022 and November 2023. Through qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews, it sought to understand how global discourses and changes in everyday life have influenced the practice of design, and tried to identify how the perception and valuation of design identity in the region has been transformed. The
results showed that, in the post-pandemic context, Latin American design is in a phase of evolution characterized by the dialectic between hyperculturality and the exhaustion of the contents of modern Western design, which has left room for the manifestation of “otherness”. This new scenario has allowed the expression of alternative perspectives, distancing itself from colonial autoexoticism. The designers interviewed have shown a deeper reflection on the relationship between design and regional identity, indicating a resilience and adaptability that places Latin American design in a favorable position to contribute to the global dialogue on design. The study concludes that design in the region, driven by a rich cultural heritage and a commitment to innovation and social responsibility, is consolidating itself as a key player in the global discussion on the future of design.
