Abstract
Since the eighties of the last century, general theories of design have suffered from a dependence on the idea of value. This article proposes a review of the possibility that theories of value (whether monetary, economic-cultural or humanitarian) can be established as a foundation for design theories. It is divided into two sections that respectively address the current context of theses on design and the problem of objectification. The debate between the unity of the sign (refer) and submission to contextuality —which semiotic theories left pending— is repeated in these assumptions about value. Values are affirmed as an attitude prior for attention to the singular unity of what is valued, and, however, they always require contextual certification, whether through quantification, transmutation or based on moral approaches. As a final suggestion, we remember the recourse to the primal (the primitive, the expressive, the religious, the functional, etc.) that previous design theories had used. This resource could be recovered by resorting to the initial moment of the logic of the design procedure, that is, the previous contents would not be values but fantasy, a daydream that has not yet become an image. Fantasy, although still diffuse, has the necessary concreteness so that the reflection procedures of projecting can be applied.
