Abstract
This article highlights the analysis of the construction of ethnic identities in conflict situations. It explains how groups in conflict defend two facets of their identity: community identity versus religious identity, whose antagonists are the majority community against the dissidents who have adopted a religion of Protestant character. These are the me phaa and the ñusaavi communities of San Juan Puerto Mountain and Yuvinani belonging to the municipality of Metlatónoc, and to the nahua community of Tlacotla in the municipality of Xalpatláhuac. First, the issue dealing with ethnic identity is addressed , specifically that generated in the communities environment; in this sense, the Indian community in the mountains has become a bastion of independence against the aggression lived and perceived outside. In referenced conflicts the dissidents were forced to move from their home community to find a destination in which they were not attacked. Thus, the processes of religious change within these communities have led to the converted to construct religious communities.Thus, the community becomes a space of resistance that indigenous institutions defend against mestizo, which represent the world of power.
