Las mujeres y las Ciencias Sociales y Humanas. Contexto histórico

Abstract

The article gives a historical account, from Colonial times until the end of the 1960’s, of the journey of  Colombian women in the literary world, in some of the fine arts and in public and cultural life of the country,  displaying their achievements in relation to concomitant topics with Social and Human Sciences leading to  the first steps of these disciplines, in which these women were key players. The situation described shows  how women, despite the social conventions that prevailed in the country, according to which they should  devote their time primarily to domestic chores or to contemplative life, were able to, very slowly and almost  uniquely, become involved in Literature, the Arts and Science. Successive changes in the country’s orientation gave women more opportunities for achievement in the fields mentioned above, but the prevailing model of  education was too limited and their illiteracy impeded greater achievements. However, from the beginning  and until mid twentieth century, some women fought, in collaboration with some open-minded men, to  gradually overcome their marginalized situation, and little by little women began to attend university,  become professionals and participate in public life. The birth of modern Social and Human Sciences in the  country took place in Escuela Normal Superior, where the first male and female professionals of these  disciplines were formed; where women became, simultaneously with men, and for the first time, pioneers of  Social Sciences and culture teaching and research, as well as trainers of and paradigms for other women who in turn were responsible for multiplying, through university lectures, what they learned with their teachers.
