Abstract

The main objective of the research that is taken as the basis for this article was to develop production methods for sustainable design objects based on the reinterpretation of traditional techniques of the Zenú indigenous people of Colombia. The intention here is to present some elements of that research and review its approach in light of contemporary reflections on the relationships between Design - Ontology - Politics and the potential of Design to build autonomy and empowerment in subordinate communities. The experimental and project type research, used the following instruments in the first exploratory phase: participatory observation; social cartography; semi-structured interviews with leaders and leading figures in the community. The development of
two lines of materials to which resistance tests were applied was carried out in the experimental phase. Finally, in the project phase, furniture prototypes with a sustainable approach were designed based on the materials developed. As results, two technological developments were produced from the reinterpretation of the traditional techniques of the Zenú indigenous people. Based on the results and the field experience, lines of understanding are drawn on the role of Design and the possibilities in the construction of decolonizing technologies for the global South. These technologies are proposed with processes and methods appropriate to the realities which make possible the evolution towards other worlds from the difference, ways of life and interests of the peoples of the south.
