Abstract
The prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in 300 humans without canine contact, 306 dog owners and their respective dogs were evaluated in Manizales (Caldas -Colombia) using the indirect immunofluorescence test (IFI) to find antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii. The prevalence was of 44%, 32.4% and 40.5% respectively. There was not any relation with age, race or sex in dogs, but the prevalence increased in relation to age in humans. Not relation was established between the transmission of Toxoplasma gondii by human contact with dogs, nor the intake of raw or badly cooked meat represented an infection risk. The breeds Rottweiler, Pitbull or Mestizo showed the highest seropositive rates among the most common nine breeds in the city. This research demonstrated that having a dog does not represent a risk to toxoplasmosis acquisition.
