Abstract
Deftly, Mary Weismantel shows us her expertise and sharpness ethnographic in a book that exposes the continuing contradictions of the Andean life through investigation and analysis of notions of race, sex, class and gender. It makes an exceptional fabric in which it collects its field experiences along the Andes between 1982-1987, adds the narratives from other ethnographers from Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, goes to broad theorizations of the social sciences and explores literature, photography and regional sculpture to introduce us to two well-known characters in the daily life of the Andes: the chola and the pishtaco. Clearly a story sensitive and descriptive offering an innovative vision to anthropology and Andean ethnography.
