Abstract

Wetlands are the most productive ecosystems in the world. Its determining characteristic is the constant or temporary availability of water throughout the year, this situation favors the successful development of a wide diversity of flora, fauna and microorganisms that interact in complex relationships to maintain an ecological balance of high fragility. In Colombia, factors such as climatic regime, orogenic complexity and biogeographic location have been combined in an exceptional way to allow the water resource to be abundant and shape the tropical landscape forming rivers, estuaries, swamps, swamps and lagoons, among others. Wetlands are living systems that require sustainable management, driven by the development of biological research that allows us to elucidate their operation, in such a way that man has access to enjoy the multiple environmental services that these systems provide; Therefore, man, as a direct or indirect beneficiary, has the obligation to ensure their restoration and / or conservation in order to avoid the loss or reduction of these habitats, which would drastically affect the high levels of biodiversity that currently sustain our country.
