Objetivo: formular la historia del concepto de estética cotidiana perteneciente a la subdisciplina del mismo nombre, a fin de señalar las aproximaciones que intentan definir la estética cotidiana en tanto concepto perteneciente a un campo del conocimiento. Materiales y métodos: se trata de una investigación cualitativa con enfoque hermenéutico, en la cual la historia de conceptos corresponde a una de sus fases. La información recolectada se obtuvo de la revisión de las principales bases de datos académicas, y fue sometida a Praccis, un proceso metodológico que entrelaza prejuicios, reflexión, análisis, comprensión, comparación, interpretación y síntesis. Resultados: el término de estética cotidiana aparece inicialmente referido en estudios que analizan el papel del cuerpo, el compromiso, la inmersión, la improvisación y la narrativa en la experiencia estética por fuera de los ámbitos del arte institucionalizado. Lo anterior conduce, posteriormente, a dos posturas que pretenden definir el concepto de estética cotidiana: una en relación con las teorías artísticas y otra independiente de ellas. Conclusiones: el concepto de estética cotidiana requiere de nuevos estudios encaminados a precisar los límites de la estética cotidiana, pues aún no se logra un consenso entre las teorías que lo abordan
