Abstract
The origin of drug use is attributed to a deficit in emotional regulation. Therefore, working on the management of emotions may reduce drug use. To determine the effect of an emotional intelligence program on self-efficacy in the face of risk behaviors in inmates of a drug rehabilitation center. Method: The study design was quasi-experimental with 2 intact groups (8 for the experimental group and 7 for the control group), aged 19 to 37 years (M = 26.67; SD = 5.79), with an average time of drug use of 9.26 years (SD = 6.31). The dependent variable was measured with Palacios' (2015) self-efficacy scale for risk behaviors. At a descriptive level, in the experimental group from pretest to posttest, global self-efficacy increased from 50% to 75% at the high level; whereas, in the control group the distribution was similar in both evaluation phases. When contrasting the pretest and posttest of the experimental group, statistically significant differences were found in general self-efficacy, selfefficacy in the face of alcohol, drugs and sexual behavior. In the clinical change index report, a significant improvement in overall self-efficacy and self-efficacy in the presence of alcohol was found in the majority of participants in the experimental group. The emotional intelligence program showed positive effects on self-efficacy for risk behaviors, especially in the dimension related to alcohol use.
