Abstract

This articles considers parks and plazas as spaces of intercrossing, as diversed ways of assuming and making use of the contemporary city, specifically the city of Manizales. As a study based on the differentiated usage by diversed social grups, the two plazas that make up the sector known as “Parque Caldas” are seen as a punctual indicator of the diversity of the appropriation of the urban space of Manizales.  Originally, the study was conceived as an investigative exercise within the course named “field methods and techniques” of the anthropology program in the Universidad de Caldas. The porpuse of the exercise was to spatially locate the different actors and social dynamics of Manizales on a flow map. Two theoretical models werw added to the map in order to construct the interpretative component of the present article: the first, being of a estructural - funcionalist character, centerd on the institutional dynamics that surround the symbolic codes that show differences in the uso of the park. All of this, with the finality of constructing an ordered evidence of the ways in which the park is usd and occupied by diffentet social actors.
