Abstract
Introduction: Snakebite envenomation is a public health concern classified as a neglected tropical disease. The World Health Organization has proposed four strategic pillars to reduce its impact, one of which is education—beginning with understanding community perceptions of snakes. Objective: To explore the knowledge, perceptions, and beliefs of a group of individuals regarding snakes and snakebite incidents. Materials and Methods: A 33-item survey was administered, covering general knowledge, beliefs, emotional reactions, perceived importance of snakes, and snakebite response practices. Results: Of the 116 respondents, 49% reported having at least one environmental risk factor at home that could attract snakes. Seventy-eight percent had encountered snakes during daily activities. Over half (52%) said they would kill a snake upon sight, and 56% associated snakes with fear, venom, and death. Common avoidance strategies included not disturbing snakes and, in some cases, using toxic substances. While 66% knew someone who had suffered a snakebite and stated that most were taken to a hospital, some were initially treated by traditional healers. Notably, 28% indicated they would respond to a bite with inappropriate first-aid measures such as cutting, applying plants, or suctioning the wound, although most recognized the importance of antivenom. Conclusions: Misconceptions persist within the surveyed population regarding snake identification and appropriate responses to envenomation. These findings highlight the urgent need for culturally sensitive education on snakebite prevention and treatment.
