Abstract

The objective of this work is to expose and evaluate the main consequentialist arguments for and against the prohibition of drugs. To achieve this objective, the existing literature on the subject was reviewed in databases such as Jstor, Springer, Sage Publishing, ScienceDirect, Taylor & Francis, etc. Main arguments were identified, presented and evaluated based on the scientific literature available. Thus, the truth value of the premises of each of the arguments and the strength of each of these were determined. The arguments in favor of prohibition are not solid but the others are. For this reason, it was concluded that there are no good reasons to prohibit drugs and that, on the contrary, there are good reasons to decriminalize the consumption and legalize the trafficking of these substances.
