Abstract
Knowledge about the therapeutic use of cannabis has been developed in an artisanal manner, based on singular experiences in addressing health conditions. Current legislation on the therapeutic use of cannabis in Argentina represents progress for those already using this plant, while also promoting a mode of production oriented toward standardization and industrialization. In this article, we address the ethicalpolitical dilemmas that arise from the standardization and industrialization of therapeutic cannabis. We question the efficacy of a standardized product aimed at a user with a standardized health condition. Relatedly, we examine how recognition is granted to those who have developed empirical and popular therapeutic knowledge and practices over decades. We draw on the concept of epistemic violence to explore the denial of alternative knowledge production systems outside of biomedicine, which can also lead to the re-stigmatization of cannabis use as an illegal and approach represents an alternative mode of health production, with the potential to (re)create new ways of understanding health, illness, and the body. These perspectives stand in contrast to biomedicine, emphasizing the singularity of each individual within their socio-communitarian context. Its standardization may reduce its therapeutic potential while limiting access, particularly in light of the socioeconomic inequalities characteristic of Latin American countries. In conclusion, we challenge the dominance of biomedical knowledge, advocating for the creation of a space for epistemological pluralism that embraces direct experience and horizontally shared knowledge. We believe this could illuminate a novel episteme within the field of Collective Health, expressed through a decolonial and transdisciplinary scientific practice.
