Abstract

Introduction: environmental ethics should encompass all aspects of life on the planet. However, the perception of humans as entities separate from nature, disconnected from the earth, and alien to its constitution, has promoted an anthropocentric approach in Western culture. This approach views nature and the earth merely as objects with monetary value. Objective: recognizing the importance of this issue, a comprehensive review of the literature on environmental ethics from the year 2000 to 2024 was conducted. Method: the Scopus database and other tools such as R-Studio, tree of science, and bibliometric analysis were used to carry out the research. Most important finding: the results of this research identified the origin and evolution of the field. Additionally, using scientific mapping techniques, the documents were classified into categories such as seminal, structural, and three main clusters: "The urgent need for a global environmental ethics", "Values in the environmentalization of education" and "The ethical awakening of the 20th century: valuing the fabric of life". Finally, an agenda for future research in this field was presented. Most relevant conclusion: the research highlights the need for a philosophical paradigm shift towards an environmental ethics that transcends the anthropocentric approach, recognizing the intrinsic value of all elements of the planet and promoting an inclusive and equitable morality that respects and cares for nature in its entirety.
