Abstract
Introduction. The native savannas of the highlands are little productive and have been used in monocultures for the production of high-density sugarcane for biomass and biofuels, which has degraded the physical and chemical properties of the soil. Objective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the incorporation of five green manure species (GM) under three planting densities: high (80 kg/ha), medium (50 kg/ha) and low (30 kg/ha) at two soil depths (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) on some physical and chemical properties of a savanna Oxisol and on sugarcane crops productivity, for its transformation into more fertile soils. Materials and methods. Treatment distribution in the field was carried out using a factorial randomized complete block design with a strip arrangement in three replicates, where factor A corresponds to the GM, factor B corresponds to the planting densities and factor C corresponds to the soil depths. Soil bulk density (BD), mechanical resistance to penetration (MRP), soil organic matter (OM), and sugarcane yield in tons of cane per hectare (TCH) were determined. Results. Crotalaria júncea, planted at a planting density of 30 kg/ha, reduced the MRP at 10 cm depth and soil BD of 0-20 cm, showing a higher TCH production (93.67 t/ha) than the control without BD, which was 50.01 t/ha. Conclusion. Green manures are presented as a viable alternative for transforming tropical savanna soils towards greater fertility.
