Abstract

In this article, the need to provide transitional justice with realistic and empirical research in relation to professional activity, State intervention and activism are defended, in order to restore the social, historical and juridical mediations that are present in the State processes of creation and management of the categories and public policies that inform it. Through a situated analysis of one case –the social and official uses of the Victim of State Terrorism category in Argentina– it is shown how transitional justice devices –and their categories– do not pre-exist to the struggles to impose their legitimate definition. Since legal taxonomies become true arenas of dispute over the recognition of diverse pretentions of recognition for the victim category, an analysis of transitional justice devices as part of the political field is proposed.
