Abstract

Objective: to understand the meaning of self-care of nursing students of a public university during their university education process. Method: hermeneutic phenomenological study. Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted with nursing students of a public university in the city of Medellin, during the years 2021 and 2022. Narrative was used, which allowed a closer approach to people as social individuals and the understanding of the way they construct their personal and cultural realities. Results: 4 thematic categories emerged: changes and transformations of the student, meaning of self-care, aspects they have not yet incorporated and practices they have incorporated. Conclusions: the narratives of the participants on the meaning of those first years of encounter with university life and the process lived throughout it, allow understanding the paths followed from their viewpoints and contexts, as well as understanding the efforts and struggles based on their limitations. Transcending this understanding, and from the Foucauldian paradigm, it is also important to hope, as some of them have done, that they learn to know and recognize themselves, their desires, capabilities, strengths, resources and limitations, as well as to learn to overcome and transform the different moments in a continuous process of introspection and reflection by making self-care a life attitude and transcending the knowledge they have learned in their university education when caring for others.
