Abstract

This paper is an introduction to de Maistré s thought. His philosophical, religious and political ideas are expounded, all in open contradiction to what illustration intended to instate. French Revolution was the motivation for de Maistré s arguments against reason and against the exaggerated pretensions of its main representatives. De Maistre rejects the proposals of the Century of Lights, and proposes the irrationality and obscurity as foundations of the true scientific and philosophical knowledge. This idea led himto the vindication of God as the only source of political authority and, for this reason, he defended the monarchy and religion as the legitimate intermediaries of God in the earth, responsible for the guidance of man's political fate. The paper illustrates the way in which de Maistre was openly opposed to authors so important for Modernity such as Rousseau, Locke, Voltaire and Hume.
