Abstract

This paper attempts at a preliminary work for the logical reconstruction of the standard grammar of linguistics, by identifying its domain of objects and basic relations without appealing to the methods used currently by grammarians. According to this proposal, I reject the view that the objective of grammar is to decide whether a given string of elements from the vocabulary of a
language is grammatical or a-grammatical and that its objects are string-sentences. Ishall reject also the view that the objective is to describe the linguistic competence of an ideal speaker  hearer of the language and that its objects are mental states or any other kind of mental object. I shall argue that the objective of grammar is the structural de scription of sentences, hence that its objects are sentences. In addition, 1 shall consider two alterna tive ways to determine the deep structure of a sentence, namely the pairing model and the substitution model. I shall conclude that the primitive relations of grammar are initial structure, deep structure, surface structure, semantic representation and phonetic representation. Finally, 1 shall deal with the question of whether initial structure and sub-categorization are just steps to determine deep structure or relations in the same range as this.
