Abstract

The Stoic sage does everything according to all virtues. In this paper, we intend to analyze the arguments that support the Stoic theory of “reciprocal implication” (antakolouthia) of virtues, through the selection of some key texts extracted from the Epitome of Stoic Ethics of Arius Didymus, comparing them with parallel passages taken from Diogenes Laertius and Plutarch. If virtues are inseparable, it is because they are all sciences and have their theorems in common, forming a unique science. A virtue is a science and the defining feature of a science is infallibility. Now a particular virtue can only be infallible if it knows the theorems of all other virtues. Phronesis, in the sense of a cardinal virtue, has a conceptual affinity with the whole of virtue, which enables the sage to be free of falling into the passions, as he lacks excessive impulses.
