Abstract
In this article, I analyze how technology, in the episode “Man Against Fire” from Black Mirror, acts as a narrative device capable of manipulating the identity and moral judgment of the subject. Drawing on Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics, I explore the notion of narrative identity and the way in which technology reconfigures the experience of time and memory. I argue that the MASS device imposes a prefabricated narrative that interrupts the protagonist's ability to narrate himself, leading to a dispossession of his identity and a loss of moral autonomy. The analysis shows how technology creates symbolic worlds and visual metaphors that transform the perception of the other and alter the structure of moral judgment. Finally, I argue that the viewer, by participating in the refiguration of the narrative, is also challenged by the moral issues raised by the series.
