Abstract

In the contemporary philosophy of science we can highlight three types of structuralism: (i) structural realism, either as epistemic structural realism or as ontic structural realism, (ii) empiricist structuralism, and (iii) metatheoretical structuralism. This paper presents and analyzes the empiricist structuralism of B. Van Fraassen (2008) and the metatheoretical structuralism of J. D. Sneed (1971) and others, in order to establish their similarities and differences based on T. Bartelborth’s (1996) distinction between “representational embedding” and “explanatory embedding” and highlighting the fundamental role of data models in scientific theories, as P. Suppes did (1992).
