Abstract
Abstract: In the hippocampus a continuous cellular proliferation and neurogenesis are produced during the whole vital period. Due to the importance of the hippocampus in the active modulation of the emotional and cognitive processes, it has been speculated that the hippocampal neurogenesis responds to a cerebral neuroadaptive mechanism to adjust to changing environments. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that the pharmacological activation of the -HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors, which are the principal cerebral receptors on which the yagé acts upon, induce neurogenesis in some concrete areas of the central nervous system, principally in the hippocampus. This article speculates on the possibility that a continuous intake of yagé can benefit the cultural adaptation of individuals to their environment, not so much due to the visions it creates, but because of the underlying biological mechanisms that its consumption creates.
