Abstract

Abstract: The MDMA (3,4-metilendioximetanfetamine) is the popular known substance called ecstasy. The MDMA, before its consumption was popular in entertaiment activities, was broadly used as a substance in psychotherapy treatments. Its use began in the early 70’s until 1986 in the USA and from 1988 to 1993 in Switzerland. This substance was used because of its unique properties to facilitate to the patients difficult emotional experiences and at the same time to strengthen the therapeutic alliance, which is was one of the principal variables that predicts the psychotherapeutic changes. This article reviews the history and uses of the MDMA in psychotherapy and the main psychopharmacologic effects of the substance which make it a very peculiar therapeutical substance. Finally some recent studies with MDMA are describe.
