Abstract

ABSTRACT: The sacred function of the cactus Trichocereus pachanoi known as San Pedro is des- cribed and interpreted, in its mythological dimensions in the South American Andes for the diverse millennial cultures that have given it an ancestral usage in religious and knowledge ceremonies, up to its popular appropriation by the postcolonial mestizo world and leading up to its present utilization in the field of popular witchcraft. The text is based on archaeological data, anthropological interpretations and on tra- ditions that have their way to the present.
