Resumen

Resumen: En el hipocampo se produce una continua proliferación celular y neurogénesis durante todo el período vital. Debido a la importancia del hipocampo en     la modulación activa de los procesos emocionales y cognitivos, se ha especulado que la neurogénesis hipocampal responde a un mecanismo cerebral neuroadaptativo de adecuación a los ambientes cambiantes. Por otra parte, está demostrado que la activación farmacológica de los receptores 5-HT1A y 5-HT2A, que son los receptores cerebrales principales sobre los que actúa el yagé, inducen neurogénesis en algunas áreas concretas del sistema nervioso central, principalmente en el hipocampo. En este artículo se especula sobre la posibilidad de que el consumo continuado de yagé favorezca la adaptación cultural de los individuos a su medio no tanto debido a las visiones inducidas por el yagé como por los mecanismos biológicos subyacentes que desencadena su consumo.
