Abstract

ABSTRACT: With the objective of evaluating the nutritional metabolic balance of selenium in grazing sheep, heparinized blood samples were taken during winter and spring seasons in 2 groups of 7 ewes each (prior to lambing and after lambing) located at the IX Region of Araucania, Chile (38° LS y 72° LW). A compounded NADPH-dependent kinetic method was used to analyse the GSH-Px activity in blood. The mean and standard deviation of the obtained values were calculated, and the “t” test was used to compare the results between groups. The blood activity of GSH-Px was 158 ± 60 U/g Hb, and was similar between groups (P>0,05). Within the group of ewes prior to breeding, 20% exhibited low values (< 60 U/g Hb) of GSH-Px blood activity, while the lactating ewes group didn’t present low values, but 20% did show a marginal value (< 130 U/g Hb), according to the productive cycle of sheep in the IX Region, Chile. These results suggest that there are metabolic imbalances of selenium in grazing sheep in Southern Chile, being the gestating ewes the most affected.
