Abstract

ABSTRACT: The present study was carried out in order to identify the impact zone of the external consultation service of the Veterinary Hospital “Diego Villegas Toro” of the Universidad de Caldas. The clinical records of 1659 patients treated in 2007 were analyzed, considering their species, the number of patients per month, and their origin. Of the 1659 patients examined in 2007, 81.49% were canines and 11.87% were felines, whereas 1.81% and 0.42% were equines and bovines, respectively. Regarding the months, the highest number of patients was seen in October with 11.09% of the total of cases, followed by February, March and May presenting similar values. The lowest number of patients was registered in December with 3.5% and January with 5.24%, resulting in an average of 138 patients per month in 2007. The Veterinary Hospital of the Universidad de Caldas in Manizales had the highest influence on the Universitaria Commune with 17.78%, followed by the Ciudadela del Norte Commune with 14.29%, whereas, the San Jose Commune was the least influenced with 0.9% and the Tablazo zone with 0.54%. For this reason, it is possible to deduce that the Universidad de Caldas’ extension project by means of the Veterinary Hospital “Diego Villegas Toro” fulfills a social labor in the municipality of Manizales and the Coffee Region, since the majority of patients were from the Universitaria and Ciudadela del Norte Communes, vulnerable urban areas of Manizales.
