Abstract

ABSTRACT: The effect of human chorionic gonadotropin on gonadal maturation and the release of gametes was studied in the marine species spotted snapper (Lutjanus guttatus) in the Bahia Malaga Aquaculture Station. One-hundred sixty animals with an average weight for females of 0.53 kg and 0.55 kg for males were evaluated. The selected females (oocytes with a diameter of 353 µ) were divided into four treatments: control treatment (without hormone), treatment one (1,000 IU/kg body wt); treatment two (1,500 IU/kg body wt); treatment three (2,000 IU/kg body wt). Males only received one dose of HCG (100 IU/kg body wt); they presented spermiation with a concentration of 2.6 x 109 spermatozoa/ml and motility time of 119 seconds. The control treatment did not present a positive response; the other treatments were effective in reproductive induction presenting oocyte diameter after induction of 429.63 µ, voluntary spawning occurred 12.95 hours after the second injection (hydrated eggs of 794 µ), with a total of 146,247/kg female body wt eggs released; the fertilization rate was 69.3%, hatching of 51.77% occurred at 12 hours after fertilization and the average length of the larvae was 800 µ.
