Abstract
ABSTRACT: The reproduction seasonality in sheep and goats is the major limitation in improving productivity. Controlling the seasonality in sheep is one of the most significant features of intensive production systems along with being a valuable aid to sheep management. Various treatments have been proposed to control seasonality. Improving reproductive efficiency through estrus induction and synchronization can be accomplished through hormonal treatments including gonadotrophins, progestagens, and luteolythic agents as prostaglandin F2α. Estrous synchronization is applied effectively in assisted reproductive techniques such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer in small ruminants. Estrous synchronization in small ruminants is achieved either by reducing the length of the luteal phase of the estrous cycle with prostaglandin F2α or by artificially extending it with exogenous progesterone or potent progestagens. Since the prostaglandin method is limited to the breeding season (active corpus luteum), different protocols for estrous synchronization using either progesterone or progestagens have been introduced. Intravaginal sponges impregnated with progestagens have been extensively used in sheep and goats in order to control estrous and ovulation during the breeding and non-breeding season. The controlled internal drug release (CIDR) devices have been also found to be effective in controlling estrus and ovulation in sheep. In small ruminants, CIDRs in conjunction with equine gonadotrophin (eCG) have been regularly used in fixed-time AI programs. The aim of the present review was to evaluate the efficiency of the most commonly used methods of estrous synchronization in ovine females, because of varying ovarian response to synchronization procedures, fertility and hormonal concentrations.
