Efecto de la veranera forrajera (Cratylia argentea) sobre la ganancia de peso de ganado doble propósito

Abstract

The importance dual purpose production system in Colombia is notorious and, nevertheless, research carried out in this area is scarce specially dealing with to the determination of the variables that improve milk production per cow and the veals’ weight gain. This study was carried out in the farm La Cruz (Universidad de Caldas) located in Anserma (Caldas), at 1,050 msnm, 24°C and 1,700 mm annual precipitation. The test determined the weight gain in ¾ crossed veals (Bos taurus x F1 ) of a dual purpose cattle system using as nutritional bases Cratylia argentea, compared with traditional feeding. A statistics blocks design at random was used with 40 two months old animals (experimental unit, the calf), divided into two groups, which were weighed themselves monthly until weaning. Highly significant differences (p≤0.001) between the groups were found in the study for the weight and race variables. The use of this supplement (C. argentea) is recommended in calves after two months of age.
