Abstract
ABSTRACT: The objective of the study was to identify neutralizing antibodies against Bovine Herpesvirus 1 in the Colombian Magdalena Medio region. Using the serum neutralization test in 150 animals from different subregions from the Colombian Magdalena Medio region who came for slaughtering in the Central Slaughter House in Dorada, Caldas, the presence of serum antibodies against bovine herpesvirus was analyzed. The serum neutralization test in plaque was performed in the virology laboratory of the Federal University of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Cooper 100 TCDI50 of BoHV-1 stump and MDBK cells were used. Eighty animals (53.3%) were positive considering 1 / 2 the cutoff point, while 68 (45.3%) were negative for viral agent. Two samples (1.3%) showed toxicity in cell cultures. Results differing variables such as sex, age, production system and origin of seropositive animals are presented. We discuss the significance of antibodies in bovines. Research should be conducted to develop a risk assessment system and economic losses induced by the presence of the virus, and to establish the critical points and the appropriate time for
vaccination to maintain the balance agent, host, and environment. In addition, the implementation of new regional studies aimed at direct diagnosis of the agent is recommended.
