Abstract

ABSTRACT: On the margins of the Cauca River in the department of Caldas, livestock husbandry is the main agricultural activity which occupies almost 48,828 has of the productive territory. The dominant systems are fattening, and dual purpose, based on grass monoculture, while the soil purpose is more directed to silvopastoral systems. In addition, the pastures are low quality and during the summer period they suffer deterioration in the quality and are scarce. The forage trees and shrubs are an alternative for this area; however, it is required to know the performance of species under the conditions of the area. The objective of this work was to evaluate the productive performance of five cut shrub forage species, in hillside zones and explore their acceptance by the animals. The evaluated species were: leucaena (Leucaena
leucocephala), Matarraton (Gliricidia sepium), mulberry (Morus alba), Nacedero (Trichanthera gigantea) and Sanjoaquin (Malvaviscus arboreus). A complete blocks at random design was used. The experimental unit was a 5m x 10m with 50 plants plot. Additionally, crude protein and neutral detergent fibe were determined. . The analyzed data corresponded to the average of the observations made during three consecutive days. We used 5 unweaned calves. The best productive performance was obtained with mulberry, followed by matarraton, nacedero and sanjoaquin, respectively. Therefore, in this area, mulberry and matarraton species are more appropriate for the protein banks. Leucaena was the species which had the lowest production. However, it is well suited to the environment of the area of study, it fixes nitrogen and these features make leucaena an appropriate species to integrate silvopastoral systems.
