Abstract
ABSTRACT: Reproduction of small ruminants can be controlled by several methods developed in recent decades through diverse synchronization protocols. Some of these methods involve administration of hormones that modify the physiological chain of events involved in the oestrous cycle. In the synchronization protocols progesterone or its analogues are used among which the most used are the progestagens which imitate the corpus luteum (CL) function. On one hand, the use of prostaglandins is an alternative for controlling reproduction by eliminating the CL and inducing a subsequent follicular phase accompanied by ovulation. Additionally, equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG), being an analogue hormone to the LH (luteinizing hormone) helps ovulation to appear. On the other hand, the hormone releasing gonadotropin (GnRH) stimulates the production of the follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) and the luteinizing hormone (LH).The use of hormones to induce oestrus has allowed the implementation of artificial insemination in ovine females and of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer programs.
