Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the seroprevalence of paratuberculosis (Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis) and explore individual cow factors associated to the serological status in a specialized dairy herd located in the northern high plateau of Antioquia, Colombia. An observational analytic cross-sectional study was performed in which all cattle over two years of age (n=83) in the herd was sampled for blood in order to obtain serum, which was analyzed by indirect ELISA in October 2014. On the same day of the sampling, individual factors data (breed, age, production lot, and parity) were collected, and an association between the individual factors studied and MAP-seropositivity was analyzed using Pearson Chi square test and Fisher test. The apparent MAP seroprevalence in the herd was 17%. The exploration of individual or animal factors associated with ELISA results yielded a statistical significant association between MAP seropositivity and the breed. MAP seroprevalence in the herd has increased in the last years, which can be related to the absence of a control program.
