Abstract

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a common disease in human and veterinary medicine that is characterized by a deterioration of the health of the cornea with decreased production or loss of quality of the precorneal tear film. The characteristic signs are ocular pain, scleritis and mucopurulent secretion, the latter being one of the most common. The use of lacrimostimulants and lacrimomimetids are recommended as pharmacological management in initial stages. A female canine patient with signs of eye irritation during a year was presented for specialized assistance. After the ophthalmological evaluation, keratoconjunctivitis sicca in the left eye was diagnosed. The patient underwent the implantation of an autologous graft of the labial salivary gland in the conjunctival fornix of the eye. After three revisions, notorious improvement of the clinical signs was observed, as well as improvement in the Schirmer test measurements. The technique is demonstrated as an excellent surgical option to be considered by the specialist in the field of veterinary ophthalmology.
