Abstract

In spite of the proven benefits of the kangaroo care, this modality of care is not used in the majority of  nurseries in the country. In order to determine the reason of its lack of use in E.S.E. Rita Arango Alvarez del  Pino - Clínica Villapilar, in Manizales, a survey was given out to the health personnel. The principal barriers  identified are the belief that a greater number of people inside the unit would increase the intra-hospital  infection rate; its use would obstruct the daily activities and procedures; and, there would be more  interruptions from the parents, who are seen as an obstacle in the neonatal care activities. Before it  is  implemented, it is recommended that training in theoretical and practical aspects be given first; certain  adjustments must be made to the nursery; and, a booklet for the parents should be made as well a guide for  the health personnel.
