Abstract

The intention of this text is to share the conception that a group of women, affiliated to the control program  for uterine neck and breast cancer in the Universidad de Caldas, Manizales, Colombia, has on health and its  determining factors. Their opinions were correlated with the definitions most commonly used by different  authors and health organizations. The reflections on the relation between the concepts and their practical  habits, which affect the prevention or risk of obtaining a lower feminine genital tract illness, especially  uterine neck cancer are described. Some of the conceptions and beliefs become obstacles in the  development of healthy life styles as well as converging with the risk factors that lead up to the illness; all of  which is transformed in cases presented in morbidity and mortality statistics. Health education is proposed  as a strategy necessary for the behavioral change, as long as the educational paradigms are transformed and different age groups are intervened, especially childhood and the teenage years, since these are the  moments during which the behaviors of individuals and groups arte established and consolidated.
