Abstract

This work includes a compilation of the main protocols for the preservation and handling of biological collections considering preventive preservation as a tool for diminishing the deterioration seen in the collections. In addition, the basic concepts  in biological collections, including procedures, recommendations and general system of handling and administration of collections or natural history museums are accumulated, with the aim of establishing methodologies that integrate, in a particular manner, the preservation and handling of the different biological collections. This process  was carried out with basis on the compilation,  revision of updated information and interviews done with the experienced personnel of preservation and handling of collections. Additionally, as a complement for the elaboration of the protocols, the practice and application of each of the procedures was carried out in the facilities of the Alexander von Humboldt Institute (HiAvH in Spanish), applying the different stages necessary for this process: entrance, quarantine, preservation manner, cataloguing, labeling, el systematization, taxonomic determination, deposit or storage and general handling of the biological collections.
