Abstract

Warczewiczella Rchb.f. is distributed in the Neotropical region and it comprises 11 species. A taxonomic and morphologic study of the genera in Colombia is presented. The techniques used correspond to the classic vegetal taxonomy. This genus is characterized mainly because of its fan-shaped leaves, uniflora inflorescence, conspicuous and eye-catching flowers, labellum basal lobes enveloping the column totally or partially and four uneven polliniums. The Warczewiczella species generally grows in dry Tropical forests (dTf), Tropical humid forests (Thf) and Montane humid forests (Mhf) in regions with moderate rainfall and abundant humidity, near rivers and streams. The study includes a macro and a micro-morphologic analysis of vegetative and reproductive structures of specimens deposited in national and international herbariums complemented with the examination of living material collected in the field or coming from private cultivations. Information about genera nomenclature changes, a key for determining species, morphologic descriptions and illustrations and finally notes about their ecology, geographic distribution and use scope are included. Five species of this genus and a natural hybrid between W. marginata Rchb.f. and W. timbiensis P. Ortiz, for which the name Warczewiczella  x plateadoensis N.F.  Alzate-Q is proposed, are recorded in Colombia.
