Abstract
Trichoptera is one of the most important orders of aquatic insects due to their diversity and the wide distribution of their species. It is present in almost all biogeographic regions performing a key role in ecosystem food chains. The family Atriplectididae NEBOISS, 1978 has a scattered distribution throughout the world and is represented only by three genera in Australia, Madagascar and the Neotropics. Atriplectididae larvae present an unusual morphology within Trichoptera, showing a narrow, elongated and retractable head and mesonotum. Usually, they are found in sandy sediments in the bottom of streams and small lakes. The distribution in the Neotropics is restricted to the Northern Andes (Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Colombia) and South-Eastern Brazil. In Colombia it has been recorded in the Andean highlands, only for the Departments of Cundinamarca, Quindío and Antioquia. In a recent sampling performed in the municipality of Manizales, with the aim of increasing knowledge of aquatic macroinvertebrates in the central Andes of Colombia, a new record of Neoatriplectides HOLZENTHAL, 1997 was made for the department of Caldas. This record extends the distribution range of the family in South America and provides unpublished information on the geographic distribution of the genus in Colombia.
