Abstract

Although about 10% of the bird-diversity in Colombia is represented by intercontinental migratory avifauna, there remain many unknown ecological aspects significant for their conservation. The present work investigated the diet of migratory birds and the supply of arthropods in the Natural Reserve El Hatico, an agroecosystem in the Department of Valle del Cauca, southwestern Colombia. Visual censuses and captures with mist-nets were made. Each captured bird was given orally 1% saline solution in order to obtain excreta samples in which the insect remains were identified, quantified and analyzed. The availability of arthropods was determined by sampling, and reference collection was made. The diet of five migratory species was similar and consisted mainly of Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Araneae, while the most abundant orders in the sampling of the agroecosystem were Diptera, Hemiptera and Coleoptera. It is suggested that the species that arrive to El Hatico Natural Reserve present an overuse of certain preys in their diet, mainly directed towards arthropods and possibly conditioned by the finding capacity of the items and the strategies of search of food of the species.
