Conocimiento local y percepción hacia el primate endémico y críticamente amenazado Plecturocebus caquetensis en Piamonte, Cauca, Colombia

Abstract

Understanding farmers' perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge about local biodiversity is essential for the formulation of education and conservation strategies pertinent to the local context. The Caquetá and Cauca titi monkey (Plecturocebus caquetensis) is an endemic and critically endangered primate species in the Andean-Amazon foothills, southwest of Colombia, a region highly affected by habitat loss and fragmentation. This study aims to I) record the perceptions of farmers towards the characteristics and natural history of P. caquetensis, and, II) determine if socio-demographic statistical differences exist, in terms of recognizance of the biological characteristics of P. caquetensis, surveying 424 people and employing chi2 tests. Farmers recognized the species from medium to high level (40%-85%), remarking that 11% (n= 45) relates the common name of the species, 11% relates birds and other primates, and 42% (n= 178) knows the species ́ vocalization but not the common name. Sixty seven percent of the surveyed population did not know about the threat category of P. caquetensis, and 33% did. No significant statistical differences in gender or precedence categories were found, but in youth, youth adults and adults age categories. Farmers recognized nineteen different common names, 12 different habitat types, and 142 occurrences of P. caquetensis (farms and households), with 27 new records for Piamonte. This study foresees the formulation of a community-based education tool focused on P. caquetensis and local biodiversity in Piamonte, Cauca.
