Abstract

If the issue to discuss were “lyrical song” instead of “contemporary performing art practices” and “work in caves” instead of “community work” with some ease we would reach the idea that a cave can help to strengthen the singing, by multiplying the sound effects - as this space has a peculiar acoustics. However, regarding the relation between contemporary performing art practices and community work, it does not seem so easy to find a sharp and immediate response. It is the reason why the reflection will be based on concrete examples: activities carried out by Trimukhi Platform in a tribal village in India. That is the reason also why this investigation will proceed slowly, step by step, seeking to answer a triple series of questions, in the following order: 1. What does “contemporary performing art” mean? What are the characteristics of such a practice, its functions?; 2. What does “community” mean? What is a community work? What are its specificities, its peculiar dynamics, its limits?; 3. Why to put in relation contemporary performing art practices and community practices? What is the interest of working crisscrossing the two axes? What does a theatre work produce in a community?
