Abstract

ABSTRACT: The reproductive efficiency in female livestock establishes the performance of herds, efficiency which is determined from the development of follicles restrained in the ovaries. These follicles, which are the fundamental unit, determine, from birth, the reproductive potential that a female can exhibit during her life. However, for a shallow approach of the follicular dynamics in the female bovine, it is necessary to include topics such as the sexual hormones involved in the estrous cycle, the physiology of the ovary and its embryonic and fetal development, folliculogenesis, follicular waves, estrous cycle phases, the follicular atresia mechanisms, the ovarian activity during gestation and in the postpartum period which allow the understanding of the importance of follicles in the reproductive life of female livestock.
