Abstract

ABSTRACT: To contribute in solving omphalitis problems in livestock farming, antimicrobial susceptibility profile of bacteria isolated from omphalitis in calves was determined. A descriptive -prospective cross sectional type study was carried out, in which 11 kinds of bacteria, grouped in 71 strains, obtained from calves with omphalitis in 10 farms of Córdoba (Colombia) were isolated. The bacteria identified in the cultures were Escherichia Coli, Staphylococcus aureus,Staphylococcus spp., Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella spp., Pseudomona spp., Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter spp., Chryseobacterium meningosepticus, Alcaligenes spp. and Citrobacter koseri. It was determined that bacteria  gram negative were sensitive to the antibiotics used such as imipenem, gentamicina, trimetoprim-sulfametoxazol, tetraciclina, ciprofloxacina, amikacina and vancomicina, except to Proteus vulgaris since they showed resistance to it. On the other hand, it was determined that the positive Gram bacteria were sensitive to antibiotics such as oxacilina, eritromicina, clindamicina and vancomicina and they were resistant to gentamicina, norfloxacina and trimethoprim-sulfametoxazol. Anaerobic bacteria were not isolated. For all the reasons above, it can be concluded that negative and positive Gram bacteria isolated in omphalitis presented sensitivity to the majority of the  antibiotics used.
