Abstract

ABSTRACT:  Using a descriptive methodology with census on all nearby farms (40) and with predesigned tables, the risk of contamination of water and workers at Molinos river (Villamaría town, Caldas region), due to livestock activities in the influence areas. In this place, livestock stands as an important economic sector, with 23,685 hectares (51.7% of territory) cultivated pasture area. Until this work was carried out, the impact: of this activity on the quality of the water in the rivers crossing this municipality and on people who handle the livestock process in farms nearby was unknown. With the characterization activities conducted by this research it was established that there is very high risk of contamination of the Molinos river because of the typologies of veterinary products applied in the region which include: low solubility in water antibiotics that gestate resistance in humans and animals; highly toxic in aquatic ecosystems antiparasitics; high persistence hormonal products that are at the same time endocrine disruptors; downloading of 72,605 tons of manure with contamination potential by nitrites, nitrates (which potentiate carcinogenic processes) and release into the environment 75% of medicine residues ingested by cattle. Most of the workers in this area have moderately high risk of contamination due to agricultural products used, from water consumption, and from exposure in their work to veterinary medicines without minimum security precautions.
